Mini Kelly vs. Kelly Pochette: What Are the Differences?

Although they share some of Hermès' most recognizable design codes, the Mini Kelly II and the Kelly Pochette have distinctly different histories, constructions, and design purposes.

The Mini Kelly traces its origins to the smaller versions of the classic Kelly that emerged throughout the 20th century. Among them was the vintage Kelly 20, recognized for its small, rounded top handle. In 2016, Hermès introduced the Mini Kelly II, reinterpreting these earlier proportions with sharper lines, reduced depth, and a more contemporary silhouette.

The Kelly Pochette, on the other hand, debuted in 2004 under the creative direction of Jean-Paul Gaultier. Introduced during his first collection for the maison, the design reimagined the classic Kelly as a clutch, preserving its signature elements within a more horizontal and compact construction.

The main distinction between the two lies precisely in their construction. The Mini Kelly II measures 20 cm and features a rigid Sellier structure, a top handle, and a removable shoulder strap. The Kelly Pochette measures approximately 22 cm, with a wider, lower body designed primarily to be carried by hand.

Although both feature the traditional sangles, central turn-lock closure, and signature Kelly flap, their proportions directly affect their interior capacity. The Mini Kelly II offers very limited space and a more restrictive opening. The Pochette makes better use of its width, providing a more accessible compartment and greater capacity for personal essentials.

Another important distinction is versatility. The Mini Kelly's removable strap allows it to be carried by hand, over the shoulder, or, depending on the wearer's height, crossbody. The Kelly Pochette does not come with a long strap and retains its original clutch concept, designed to be carried by its small top handle or directly in the hand.

On the secondary market, both models hold significant positions, although they attract different types of demand. The Mini Kelly II has become one of Hermès' most sought-after designs, while the Kelly Pochette maintains a dedicated collector following, driven by its history, limited production, and irregular availability.

Choosing between the two therefore goes far beyond a difference of just a few centimeters. The Mini Kelly II represents a more structured and versatile interpretation of the traditional Kelly. The Pochette reflects Jean-Paul Gaultier's vision of the same classic, emphasizing horizontal proportions and a distinctly handheld design.

Two interpretations of the same icon, each with its own identity and wearing experience.
